When To Stop Reading And Book An Appointment

A specific list. If anything on it applies to you, no supplement on any shelf is the right answer.

When To Stop Reading And Book An Appointment

This page exists because a company selling supplements has an obvious incentive not to write it. Everything below describes situations where the correct action is an appointment, not a purchase — ours or anyone else's.

See Someone Promptly

  • A mole that is changing in size, shape or colour, has an irregular border, more than one colour, or is larger than about six millimetres
  • Any new mole appearing after roughly the age of thirty
  • A sore that has not healed in a month, or heals and reopens
  • A new dark stripe under a nail, particularly one that is widening or spreading onto the surrounding skin
  • A patch that itches, bleeds, crusts or is tender without an explanation
  • Skin changes alongside fever, joint pain, or feeling generally unwell

Nothing in that list is a reason to panic and every item on it is a reason to be seen. Most turn out to be nothing. The ones that are not are far easier to treat early.

Book An Appointment For

  • Acne that is painful, leaving marks or scars, or has not responded to over-the-counter products after a few months
  • Eczema or psoriasis that is spreading, cracking, weeping or disturbing your sleep
  • Persistent facial redness, visible vessels or flushing that is worsening
  • Hair loss with a pattern, patchy round bald spots, or shedding lasting beyond six months
  • Any scalp symptom involving pain, burning or visible scarring
  • Sudden changes in skin texture or pigmentation with no obvious cause
  • Anything affecting your daily life or your mood, which is a legitimate medical reason entirely by itself

Ask For Blood Tests When

Two cheap tests answer a surprising share of the questions people bring to supplement shelves.

Ferritin, if you are shedding hair, particularly if you menstruate. Low iron stores are a genuinely established contributor and no supplement substitutes for knowing the number.

Thyroid function, if you have hair loss with fatigue, weight change, temperature intolerance or dry skin. Thyroid disease is common, treatable and frequently missed.

If you take Gelagen, tell the laboratory before either test. The 5000 mcg of biotin interferes with a wide range of immunoassays including thyroid panels, and the result can be wrong in either direction.

What To Bring

Photographs of the problem at its worst, since it will invariably behave itself in the waiting room. A list of every product you apply and every supplement you swallow, with amounts. When it started and what makes it better or worse. Any family history.

That preparation turns a rushed appointment into a useful one, and it is worth the ten minutes.

What A Supplement Is For

Nutritional support for tissue that is being rebuilt, in somebody who may be short of the nutrients that rebuilding requires. That is the whole claim, it is a narrow one, and it is the reason none of the conditions listed above appears anywhere on this site as something we address.

Quick Answers

Is it worth going for mild acne?

If it is bothering you, yes. Effective treatments exist at every severity and the earlier scarring is prevented, the better.

Can a GP handle skin problems?

Very often, yes, and they are usually the route to a dermatologist anyway. Start there unless something on the urgent list applies.

Should I stop the supplement before an appointment?

No, but bring it with you, and tell the laboratory about the biotin before any blood test.
