Cautions
Before You Buy
The page we would want to read first. Two figures on this panel need genuine care and neither is softened here.
Two Figures Need Real Care
Vitamin A, 630 mcg per serving. Do not take Gelagen if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding or are trying to conceive unless your doctor has approved it. A large preformed vitamin A intake in the first weeks of a pregnancy is capable of causing birth defects. The same conversation applies if you already take a multivitamin containing vitamin A, use a prescription retinoid such as isotretinoin or acitretin, or eat liver regularly, because the ceiling applies to your total from every source.
Biotin, 5000 mcg per serving. At that concentration biotin disturbs a long list of immunoassay tests. Thyroid function tests are the most commonly affected and cardiac troponin is the most consequential, and the interference can push a result in either direction — a normal thyroid reading flagged as abnormal, or a genuine heart attack marker read as normal. It does not harm you; it corrupts the number. Tell the laboratory or the nurse before blood is drawn and ask whether to pause it for a few days.
Do Not Take This If
- You are under eighteen. The panel is calculated for adults.
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive, without medical approval.
- You take a prescription retinoid and your prescriber has not approved it.
- You have a known allergy to anything on the label. Read the whole jar.
- Your liver is unwell, because that is where vitamin A is processed and stockpiled.
- A clinician has told you to restrict vitamin A, biotin, folate or zinc.
- You are expecting it to treat a diagnosed skin or hair condition.
Ask Someone First If
- You already take a multivitamin or any supplement containing these nutrients.
- You are managing blood sugar, because the base contains sugars.
- You take thyroid medication, or expect thyroid bloods within the next month.
- Weight-loss surgery, or anything else that changes how much you absorb.
- You take anticonvulsants, methotrexate or anything acting on folate.
- You already supplement zinc, since ours adds to that total.
Our Amounts Against The Published Ceilings
Upper limits are for adults and refer to total daily intake from every source combined, which is the arithmetic people forget to do.
| Nutrient | Per serving | Adult ceiling | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin A | 630 mcg | 3000 mcg preformed | Comfortably inside the limit on its own. Stack a multivitamin on top and that margin vanishes. |
| Biotin | 5000 mcg | None established | No toxicity ceiling has been set, which is not the same as no consequences. Laboratory interference is the consequence. |
| Zinc | 2.7 mg | 40 mg | Deliberately modest so that months of daily use do not displace copper. |
| Folate | 442 mcg DFE | 1000 mcg folic acid | Within range. Plenty of folate can hide a failing B12 status, which is part of why B12 appears alongside it here. |
| Vitamin D | 10 mcg | 100 mcg | A maintenance amount. If you already take a separate vitamin D, add the two together. |
| Vitamin E | 7.4 mg | 1000 mg | Far below any limit. Bring it up with a doctor if you are on anticoagulants. |
| Vitamin C | 20 mg | 2000 mg | A small supporting amount, well inside every limit. |
| Vitamin B12 | 6 mcg | None established | Excess is excreted and no ceiling has been set for oral B12. |
Side Effects People Report
Most people take Gelagen and notice nothing beyond the taste. Where something is reported it is almost always in the first week and almost always mild: some digestive unsettlement, occasionally a mild headache. Both usually pass, and taking the serving with food rather than on an empty stomach resolves most of it.
Stop and get medical advice if you develop a rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, persistent nausea or unusual headaches. Those are not settling-in effects.
What This Product Is Not
It is a dietary supplement. It is not a medicine, it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and nothing in this category from any brand in the United States is, because supplements sit under food law rather than drug law. Registration of a facility is not approval of a product.
Acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrhoeic dermatitis, alopecia and hair loss driven by the thyroid all belong to medicine. They have treatments, those treatments work, and none of them is a gummy. If something on your skin is painful, spreading, bleeding, changing colour or simply not resolving, that is a dermatologist.
Storage And Children
Closed, cool, dry, out of direct sunlight, and out of reach of children. A berry gummy is indistinguishable from a sweet to a four year old, and a handful delivers far more vitamin A than a child should have. Should a child get through a handful, ring your local poison control line.
Safety Questions
Is 5000 mcg of biotin dangerous?
No toxicity ceiling has been established and the excess is excreted. The real issue is laboratory interference rather than toxicity, and that is entirely manageable as long as whoever draws your blood knows about it.
Can I take it with thyroid medication?
Ask your doctor, and raise the biotin specifically. The medication is not the problem; the monitoring is, because your dose is adjusted using blood results biotin can distort.
Is it safe for teenagers?
The formula assumes an adult body and we would not put it in front of anyone younger than eighteen. A teenager worried about their skin belongs in a consulting room, where the options are considerably better.
Does it contain allergens?
The complete statement is printed on the jar and that statement is the authority. If you have any food allergy, read it before you break the seal.
Can I take it indefinitely?
Many people do. Keep it on your medical record and recalculate your totals if you add another supplement later.
